"I wanted to make them look like a luxurious cult!" said stylist Karla Welch of the look that singer Justin Bieber and his band wore at the Billboard Music Awards last night. The 22-year-old Canadian pop star took home the prize for top male artist, and his performance ensemble solidified his standing as a fashion trailblazer, too. "I had a creative call with Nick DeMoura [Bieber's creative director and choreographer] and we talked about the box and the projections," explained Welch, who also worked with the young talent on his Purpose tour wardrobe.
Bieber's outfit yesterday evening was decidedly more muted than what we've seen from his onstage style so far, and featured custom pieces from CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists Baja East. "We knew it needed to be light colors, something different than what the song actually feels like," said Welch. "I've known Scott [Studenberg] and John [Targon] since the beginning of Baja East and gave them a call." The tonal pairing of a baseball jacket and painterly Purpose top was a cool and subtle way to work a print. Bieber's favorite pieces in the tour wardrobe? "[The] custom Purpose tees," said Welch. "He, of course, loves how soft they are."
